We finally started to head back west after our amazing adventures in Montana and Wyoming. Our first day of driving west took us to Boise, ID. About halfway from Jackson to Boise, we stopped at Craters of the Moon National Monument. What a crazy place! Out in the middle of nowhere is a land with crazy moon-like features and lava tubes! Leila got a ranger booklet to complete while we toured the park.
We hiked to the top of Inferno Cone and had quite the view!
Luckily some of the lava tubes were open for exploration (some were closed for maintenance). Surprisingly, Leila LOVED climbing around inside them! We explored Dewdrop Cave.
Leila earned her Junior LUNAR Ranger Badge before we left. She had the option of wearing the Ranger's hat or an atronaut helmet. She chose the ranger hat since she wants to be a ranger when she grows up, but thankfully the ranger let Christopher wear the astronaut's helmet! He was pretty thrilled!
She actually got a patch at this park, not a badge. Some parks do the shiny gold badge, some a wooden badge (Grand Teton) and some do a patch. Also at some parks you can donate a dollar and get both a badge and a patch! We love the Junior Ranger Program!!
That night we stayed in the exciting town of Boise. Ha!!
